How to record your screen in 4K at 60 fps on Windows

What it takes to make a sharp 4K 60 fps screen recording on Windows: the display, the frame rate, the bitrate, and the export settings that keep small text crisp.

Short answer

A screen recording is as sharp as the pixels on your screen. To get real 4K, record a 4K display at its own resolution, at 60 frames a second, and export at the same size with a high enough bitrate. Sceed records at up to 60 fps and exports H.264 MP4 at up to 4K and 60 fps using the graphics card’s encoder.

Where sharpness comes from

Three things decide how sharp a screen recording looks: how many pixels were captured, how many frames a second, and how much data the file is allowed to use for each of them.

SettingWhat it doesFor screen recordings
ResolutionHow many pixels are in each frameMatch the display. 4K is 3840 × 2160.
Frame rateHow many frames are shown each second60 for smooth scrolling and cursor movement, 30 for slides and static screens.
BitrateHow much data each second of video may useToo low and text smears when the picture moves.

You cannot record more pixels than you have

A 1080p monitor has 1920 × 1080 pixels. Recording it gives a 1080p video. Exporting that at 4K makes a bigger file, not a sharper one. To record true 4K you need a 4K display running at its native resolution.

Windows display scaling (125%, 150%) does not reduce the pixels captured. It makes things larger on screen, which is helpful: text recorded at 150% on a 4K display is still readable when the video is watched in a small player.

Why recordings look soft

  • Recorded small, shown large. A small window stretched to fill a 1080p or 4K video is being enlarged. Record at the size you will export.

  • A low bitrate. Video compression throws detail away when the picture changes quickly. Raise the quality tier.

  • Zooming into too few pixels. A 2× zoom on a 1080p recording shows 960 × 540 pixels across the frame. Recording on a higher-resolution display leaves room to zoom.

  • The player. Video sites re-encode uploads. Uploading at 4K usually gets a better stream even for viewers watching at 1080p.

Export settings in Sceed

The export dialog has three quality tiers, Good, High and Ultra, and shows roughly how many megabytes a minute each will produce. Encoding runs on the graphics card, so a 4K export does not take all afternoon. An optional sharpen pass keeps small interface text crisp. Free exports run up to three minutes with a small mark at any resolution; Pro removes both.

With Sceed, step by step

  1. 1

    Set the frame rate

In Sceed’s Settings, set the recording frame rate to 60.

  2. 2

    Record at the display’s resolution

Record the window, area or monitor. Sceed captures the real pixels; there is nothing to set.

  3. 3

    Export at 4K

Press Export and choose 4K. The dialog shows the bitrate and the file size per minute before you start.

  4. 4

    Pick a quality

Choose High for most videos, Ultra for fine text or fast motion.

  5. 5

    Sharpen if needed

Switch on Sharpen for small text. It keeps edges crisp without halos.

Questions

Can I record 4K on a 1080p monitor?

You can export at 4K, but the picture was captured at 1080p, so it is an enlargement. For real 4K detail, record a 4K display.

Is 60 fps worth it for screen recordings?

Yes when things move: scrolling, dragging, cursor travel and zooms all look smoother. For slides or mostly still screens, 30 is enough and makes a smaller file.

What bitrate should a 4K screen recording use?

It depends on how much moves. Sceed’s High tier is a sound default; Ultra uses more data for fine text and fast motion. The dialog shows megabits a second and megabytes a minute for each.

Does the free plan export in 4K?

Yes. Free exports can be 4K at 60 fps. They run up to three minutes and carry a small Sceed mark.
