How to make a product demo video
A practical method for a product demo video people watch to the end: the script, the recording, the edit and the export, done on Windows in an afternoon.

A good product demo video shows one person solving one problem in under two minutes. Write the steps as a list, set the product up with clean demo data, record each step in one take, then edit: cut the waiting, zoom on each control you mention, add a title and chapter cards, and export at high resolution.
Decide what the demo is for
A demo on a landing page has a different job from one in a sales email or a changelog. Pick one viewer and one outcome before you record.
| Where it goes | Length | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Landing page hero | 30 to 60 seconds | The one thing the product does, no voice needed |
| Feature launch | 60 to 120 seconds | The problem, the feature, the result |
| Sales follow-up | 2 to 4 minutes | The buyer’s own case, with your face |
| Onboarding | 1 to 3 minutes per task | One task from start to finish |
Script by steps, not by sentences
Reading a script word for word sounds like reading. Write the steps instead, each as a few words: "Create a project. Invite a teammate. Assign the first task. Show the board update." Say them in your own words. If you want the wording in front of you, a teleprompter that floats on screen and stays out of the recording helps.
Set the stage
Demo data that looks real: names, numbers, a believable amount of it.
A clean window: no bookmarks bar, no unrelated tabs, no notifications.
Browser zoom at 110% or 125% so text is readable in a small player.
The start state ready, so the first second of video is already interesting.
Record
Record the window, not the whole screen. Move the mouse on purpose: go, stop, click. Do not circle the pointer while you talk. Leave a beat of silence after each step; it gives the edit somewhere to cut and the viewer a moment to take it in.
Edit for attention
Cut everything that is not a step: loading, typing long text, hesitation. See trimming and cutting.
Zoom on each control as you mention it, then come back out. See how to zoom.
Smooth the cursor so the pointer glides. In Sceed it is on by default.
Point at the result with a callout or a pop-out when a number or a status proves the claim.
Chapter the video with short cards between features, so a viewer who skips can find their place.
Frame it on a background that matches the brand.
Finish
End on the outcome, then one line about what to do next. Export at the resolution of the display you recorded, and upload the highest quality the destination allows. For a landing page loop with no sound, a short MP4 is smaller and sharper than a GIF.
All of this happens in one app with Sceed: the recorder, the cursor, zooms, sections, effects and export. See the product demo use case for a worked example.
With Sceed, step by step
- 1
Write the steps
List the five or six things the viewer must see, in order. That list is the script.
- 2
Prepare the product
Use a demo account with realistic data. Size the window to 16:9 and hide anything personal.
- 3
Record in one take
Record the window with Sceed while you talk through the list. If you slip, pause and repeat the step.
- 4
Cut and zoom
Remove the slips and the waiting. Add a zoom block on each control you mention.
- 5
Add structure
Open with a title card, put a chapter section between features, and end with a card that says what to do next.
- 6
Export
Export an MP4 at the resolution of your display, up to 4K, and post it.

Questions
How long should a product demo video be?
As short as it can be while showing one complete outcome. Under a minute for a landing page, one to two minutes for a feature, up to four for a sales walkthrough.
Do I need a voiceover?
Not always. Landing page demos are usually watched muted, so zooms, callouts and text overlays carry the story. Feature and sales demos benefit from a voice.
What software do I need to make a product demo on Windows?
A screen recorder with an editor. Sceed records the window and adds the zooms, cursor smoothing, frames, sections and export in one Windows app.
Should the demo use real customer data?
No. Use a demo account with made-up but believable data, and blur anything real that slips in.
